Description
This is an original etching by French master printmaker Paul Adolphe Rajon (1842–1888), created in 1870. The etching is based on a painting that is now housed in the Tate Museum. Originally attributed to Joshua Reynolds (1723–1792)—the esteemed portraitist and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts—the painting Mrs. Fox was later determined to be the work of an anonymous artist, executed in 1870. The painter closely emulated Reynolds’ style, making the portrait nearly indistinguishable from his works.
Rajon, known for his exceptional skill in printmaking, masterfully employed etching, drypoint, and plate tone to achieve a sophisticated, atmospheric effect in this piece. His prints were widely collected during his time, and the same etching is also held in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This print measures 6.5 × 5.5 inches (image) and 8× 6 inches (plate). It was printed on laid paper with a watermark. The ink lines are strong and crisp, with a clear embossing effect, suggesting this is an early impression. The print is in excellent condition, with only minor tears on the right edge and lower right corner.
