Description
Presented here is a limited edition color lithograph by renowned Fauvist painter Maurice Vlaminck (1876–1958), printed in 1956.
Vlaminck is celebrated for his distinctive handling of color—vivid yet thoughtfully controlled—even during his Fauvist period. Compared to his contemporaries Henri Matisse and André Derain, Vlaminck’s palette is characteristically more subdued, maintaining subtlety without sacrificing contrast. In the later years of his career, he adopted a less saturated color scheme, primarily producing serene landscape paintings that reflect this evolved aesthetic. His prints from this period echo that approach, marked by refined and tranquil charm.
The current lithograph, titled”Montigny-sur-Avre,” exemplifies Vlaminck’s mature style, executed two years before his death in 1958. It gracefully captures the rustic beauty and tranquil ambiance of this picturesque village in northern France.
This artwork was originally framed. Upon examination outside the frame, I found the print had been permanently glued to a backing board. Some minor tears are present along the lower edge—likely due to a previous owner’s attempt to separate the board. There are minor creases in the lower part of the image, and some foxing on the backing board, lower left. However, the image itself remains in good condition, with strong, layered colors. The lithograph bears both a plate signature and an original hand signature by Vlaminck at the lower right corner, along with the edition number 87/200inscribed in pencil at the lower left. A pencil inscription from a previous collector appears on the back of the board: “PUBLISHED BY PROURLOT 1956‘MONTIGNY-SUR-AVRE’ (W. #266)” and “20349 B” .
