Description
An engraving of the Dutch Golden Age painter Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom (1562–1640). The print is based on a work by Isaac Oliver (1565–1617, lower left) and was engraved by English printmaker Thomas Chambers (1724–1789, lower right).
The engraving measures 9.5 × 8 inches (paper) and 6.5 × 5 inches (image). Press marks are clearly visible along the edges, and the ink lines are crisp and sharp, suggesting that it is an authentic engraving rather than a mass reproduction like photogravure. The smooth surface and lack of a laid pattern indicate that the impression is on wove paper, which was first produced after 1757. When held against the light, a watermark reading “1807” is visible, suggesting that the piece was printed in that year or shortly thereafter. Since Thomas Chambers passed away before 1807, this engraving is likely posthumously printed.
