Description
Two Portrait Engravings of Raphael – 19th Century
These two engravings, created by different 19th-centuryartists, are both after Renaissance master Raphael’s self-portrait:
- By British engraver John Thompson (1785–1866), published in 1836
- By British engraver William Holl the Younger (1771–1838), published in 1834
I have listed these two prints together because it isinteresting to view them side-by-side and compare how different printmakersinterpret the same subject. Personally, although both engravings are skillfullyexecuted, I favor Holl’s approach, which uses more fluent lines and subtlevalue transitions.
Both pieces are in fair condition with no visible damage. The paper of each shows age-related discoloration and foxing.
