Description
Emil Pottner–Concentration Camp–Original WWILithograph–Berlin Secession–Julius Bard–1916–Rare
Emil Pottner (1872–1942) was a German painter andprintmaker associated with the Berlin Secession. Known for his expressiveanimal studies and color lithographs, Pottner belonged to the same artisticcircle as Lovis Corinth, Max Slevogt, and Käthe Kollwitz. His work frequentlyappeared in early 20th-century exhibitions and publications, though much of hisestate was lost during WWII.
This lithograph, titled Concentrationslager (ConcentrationCamp) , is an original 1916 print published in Berlin by Julius Bard as partof the influential World War I graphic-art project “Krieg und Kunst.Original-Steinzeichnungen der Berliner Secession” (1914–1917). This landmarkportfolio contained 41 lithographs drawn directly on stone by leading Secessionartists and printed in small batches.
Pottner’s sheet depicts caged poultry with a largerooster and turkey outside—a biting piece of social commentary typical of theSecession’s wartime satire. The title Concentrationslager (“concentration camp”) reflects the ironic and critical tone of many BerlinSecession prints produced during the war years.
This impression is in fair/poor condition. The imageremains strong with excellent color retention. However, the upper right marginhas a long, rectangle damage repaired with tape on the verso, and the sheetshows handling wear, minor tears, and minor age toning.
