Description

Eugène Huot after Peter Paul Rubens-Elisabeth deFrance-1840s Lithograph

A mid-19th-century lithograph by French lithographerEugène Huot after Peter Paul Rubens, depicting Elisabeth of France (1602–1644),Queen of Spain and first wife of Philip IV. The sheet is titled “ELISABETH DEFRANCE” beneath the image and identifies Rubens as the original artist at thetop.

Eugène Huot was a 19th-century French lithographer activein the production of reproductive prints after paintings by European OldMasters. He contributed lithographs to Galerie Impériale de l’Ermitage, anambitious French publication reproducing important paintings from the ImperialHermitage collection in St. Petersburg. His lithographs translated paintedworks into finely modeled tonal images intended to make major Europeancollections accessible to a wider audience.

This lithograph was published as part of GalerieImpériale de l’Ermitage, issued in Paris in the 1840s. The sheet bears “HUOTlith.” at lower left and “Imprimé par PAUL PETIT” at lower right, with “GOHIERDESFONTAINES Éditeur” and “GALERIE IMPÉRIALE DE L’ERMITAGE” along the lowermargin. The publication is generally dated 1845–1847.

The lithograph is in poor condition. There is overallage-related coloration, mat burn, foxing, scattered staining, and handlingwear. A prominent water stain is present at the lower right corner, withadditional staining along the lower margin. A long diagonal crease is visiblefrom the verso, together with other minor creases and handling marks. Despitethese issues, the principal portrait image remains mostly intact and thelithographic detail is clearly preserved. The sheet is unframed. Please referto the pictures for condition.
