Description
This piece is a photomechanical line block reproduction of William Nicholson’s famous 1898 woodcut titled Cricket , part of his renowned Almanac of Twelve Sports . The original series, created by Nicholson (1872–1949), was published between 1897 and 1898 by Heinemann in London and Russell in the United States. Acclaimed for its clean, bold lines and elegant simplicity, the series has been widely celebrated and reissued through various reproduction methods including lithography and photomechanical printing.
This specific print is a halftone reproduction, likely intended for German audiences. It uses a fine screen pattern for shading and features a reduced plate size of 4 x 4 inches, compared to the original’s 8 x 8inches. It is the sixth image (June) in the twelve-month series and is printed on high-quality woven paper. The overall condition is excellent, with only minor edge coloration.
