Description

The Samaritan Woman at the Well-Jan de Bisschop after Carracci-1660s Master Etching An original 1669 etching by Dutch artist Jan de Bisschop (1628–1671), after Annibale Carracci (1560–1609), depicting Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well, with the apostles gathered at right. The composition reproduces a work by Carracci associated with the collection of Amsterdam collector Jan Six. This impression is the second state, Hollstein Dutch 4-2(2), though an even later state with G. Valk publisher inscription also exists. The current impression is printed on laid paper without a visible watermark. Jan de Bisschop, also known as Johannes Episcopius, was a Dutch draughtsman and printmaker active in the 17th century. He is particularly known for drawings and prints after Italian Renaissance and Baroque masters, and his works are represented in major museum collections including the Rijksmuseum, British Museum, and Albertina. The plate is signed and dated within the image “Annib. Carr. inv. J. Episc. f. 1669.” The second state includes the engraved dedication to the Amsterdam collector Jan Six in the lower margin. The print is in fair condition. The sheet is trimmed along or slightly inside the plate mark and shows overall coloration, soiling, minor stains, edge chips and other edge damage. There is a fold mark and minor tear at the upper right corner, with additional handling wear consistent with age. The verso bears old pencil collection and identification notes and a partial pen signature. Unframed. Please refer to the pictures for condition. ——————– Details: Artist: Jan de Bisschop (1628–1671) After: Annibale Carracci (1560–1609) Title: The Samaritan Woman at the Well Date: 1669 Medium: Etching on laid paper Catalogue Raisonné: Hollstein Dutch 4-2(2) Dedication: Jan Six (1618–1700) Provenance: A Long Island, New York collector World Auction Gallery, East Meadow, New York Dimensions: Paper: 16 x 13 in Framing: Unframed Condition: Fair, trimmed along or inside plate mark, coloration, soiling, minor stains, edge chips, edge damages, fold mark and minor tear at upper right corner, handling wear, pencil inscriptions and partial collector’s pen signature on verso, unframed. ——————– I have conducted thorough research to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of this work to the best of my ability.
