Description
Study of a Woman-Angelo Comolli-1910s Italian Charcoal Drawing
An original charcoal and graphite drawing on laid paper from the portfolio of Italian artist Angelo Comolli (1863-1949), created in 1911 during his tenure at the Eric Pape School of Art in Boston. The academic figure study depicts a standing woman in flowing classical dress, wearing a headband and necklace and extending one arm while holding a delicate sprig. Ceramic vessels and draped fabric appear beside the figure. Dense crosshatching, softly blended charcoal, and careful tonal modeling create a strong sense of volume and theatrical presence.
Angelo Comolli was a Milanese painter, muralist, architectural decorator, and longtime professor at the Accademia di Brera, best known for his large-scale decorative projects and accomplished preparatory figure drawings.
The sheet is signed Comolli and dated 1911 at lower left, with an additional handwritten “Mar 1911” inscription along the lower right margin. The laid paper bears an L. BERVILLE / FRANCE watermark.
The drawing is in fair condition. The sheet shows age-related discoloration, handling marks, creases, and minor tears along the edges. Pinholes from previous mountings are present near the margins. The verso shows ghosting from the charcoal image. Unframed. Please refer to the pictures for condition.
