Schloss Elz Castle – 19th Century German Engraving – Verhas Pinx – H. Winkles Sculp – Kunst Verlag Leipzig

Description

A fine 19th-century German steel engraving depicting Schloss Eltz, one of the most picturesque medieval castles in Germany, located in the Moselle valley between Koblenz and Trier.
The composition, after Verhas, was engraved by H. Winkles and published in Leipzig by Kunst-Verlag, capturing the fairy-tale silhouette of the Eltz Castle rising above wooded hills.
In the foreground, cattle wade in a calm river while figures cross a stone bridge — a tranquil contrast to the imposing fortress beyond.
Executed with precision characteristic of early Biedermeier engraving, this print conveys both romantic nostalgia and topographical accuracy.
Printed on wove paper in crisp black ink, with dense cross-hatching and fine linear detail typical of German engraving workshops of the mid-19th century. The impression remains strong with balanced tonality and clear architectural delineation.
Minor foxing in the margins, slight age toning; verso clean.
Unframed.
