Description
Roger Derieux – The Studio – Oil on Paper – 20th Century French Modernism
Roger Derieux (1922–2015) was a Paris-born modern artist trained at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. His first exhibition was held in Paris in 1947, and he went on to have more than 50 solo exhibitions in France and internationally. In 2012–2013, the Musée Henri-Martin presented a major retrospective, Peintures, collages, couleurs vivantes. His works are held in important public collections including the Musée de Grenoble and the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
Throughout his life, Derieux engaged with several modernist movements, including Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. This early work reflects his experimentation with Fauvist style, yet already shows the emergence of the pastel palette and impasto brushwork that would later become distinctive features of his career. Additionally, small scale oil on paper was also a favorite medium for Derieux throughout his lifetime.
