Description
Remigius Netzer – Still Life with Bottles – Color Woodcut – 20th Century German Expressionism
Remigius Netzer (1916–1985) was born in Düsseldorf, Germany. He studied at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. In 1946, he co-founded the Neue Gruppe, a collective of modern artists in Munich, and later served as its president.
Netzer became known for both his oil paintings and his woodcuts. His color woodcuts, much like his later painting style, are characterized by strong contour lines, flat shapes, and bold, vibrant colors. This print, Flaschenstillleben (Bottle Still Life), produced in 1949, is an excellent example of Netzer’s post-war expressionist style. Hand-pulled by the artist on laid paper, this impression has been well preserved. The colors remain strong after more than seven decades. The sheet shows no evidence of previous mounting and is in overall good condition, with only minor creases in the lower left corner and slight discoloration. The medium, title, signature, year, and a personal dedication to a friend are all inscribed in pencil along the bottom.
