Description
This is a fascinating small-scale 17th-century engraving depicting Sigismund of Luxembourg (1368–1437), who held the titles of King of Hungary, Germany, Bohemia, and Holy Roman Emperor. The piece measures just 2.25× 1.75 inches and is engraved on laid paper, which has been trimmed and mounted to a backing board.
Portrait engravings of Roman emperors were widely produced and collected during the 16th and 17th centuries. Due to the lack of a visible signature or publisher’s mark, the engraver of this piece remains unidentified. However, its style and technique are consistent with prints of that era.
Despite its age, the print remains in good condition, with only minor foxing and toning. The Latin inscription beneath the portrait reads:
“Sigismundus Romanorum Imperator” (Sigismund, Emperor of the Romans).
