Rare – Large Etching with Gold Leaf – Guillaume Azoulay – Aquarius – Limited Edition of 35 – 1989
This striking hand-gilded etching was created byMorocco-born, Paris-raised artist Guillaume Azoulay. A self-taught talent,Azoulay drew inspiration from his extensive travels and interactions withpeople across cultures. He is widely celebrated for his refined line work,vibrant colors, and dynamic compositions—distinctive elements that set his workapart from his contemporaries. In 1978, two of his pieces were acquired by the LouvreMuseum for its permanent collection.
This particular impression is part of a rare edition ofonly 35 prints from Azoulay’s Zodiac series. Over the years, he producedvarious versions of Aquarius , including black-and-white, colorized, andmultiple gilded editions. Based on my research, this 1989 edition appears to bethe smallest and rarest of them. The hand-applied gold leaf and rich colorationenhance the intricate and luxurious quality of the original design. The print is in excellent condition, with strong linesand vivid color. The paper is clean with no visible discoloration, aside from aminor fold mark in the lower section.
