A studio archive lot of 12 original design sketches byAmerican artist Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009), dating from the 1970s throughthe 1990s. Executed in ink and wash, marker, watercolor, graphite, and relateddrawing media on assorted papers, including tracing paper. The group includesdesigns for logos and emblems, decorative devices, ornamental forms, displayconcepts, sculptural objects, and other applied-design ideas. Several sheetscontain multiple studies or related variations, offering a direct view ofLeopold’s design and development process.
Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009) was an American painter,muralist, sculptor, illustrator, cartoonist, and educator. He studied at theAmerican Artists School and Pratt Institute and maintained studios in York,Pennsylvania, and Forest Hills, New York. His extensive working archivereflects the broad range of his practice, including painting, illustration,sculpture, murals, commercial design, and decorative projects.
Condition varies throughout the group. This is an as-isstudio lot. The sheets show varying degrees of toning, folds, handling creases,edge wear, tears, losses, staining, surface dirt, tape, mounting remnants, andother age-related studio wear. Several works are executed on thin tracing paperand are fragile. Some drawings are taped or mounted to larger backing sheets,and several retain Herbert Leopold Studios stamps or handwritten studionotations. Please refer to the pictures for condition.
