Description
George Morland (1763–1804) was an English painter renowned for his rustic scenes of everyday life. His style and subject matter evoke comparisons to Dutch Golden Age artists such as Adriaen van Ostade. This impression depicts a classic Morland theme: a woodcutter at work, watched by a country girl—an intimate and bucolic moment typical of Morland’s rural narratives.
Morland worked closely with print publishers, and many of his drawings were intended for reproduction. Prints after his works were highly popular during his lifetime and remained in demand well after his death. As lithography was not widely used during Morland’s life (invented in the late 18th centuryand popularized in the early 19th), this impression was likely produced posthumously in the mid-19th century, based on one of his earlier drawings.
This lithograph is printed on wove paper and remains in fair condition. The image area is intact and strong, though the paper shows foxing, general toning, and a fold crease visible on the back.
