Description
Church of Saint-Augustin under Construction, Paris-19thCentury Graphite Drawing
An original graphite drawing depicting a large domedchurch complex under construction or restoration, probably the Church ofSaint-Augustin in Paris. Scaffolding surrounds the principal dome and upperstructure, with adjacent architectural elements, a high enclosing wall, a smallfigure on the scaffolding, and a loosely rendered tree at right. Based on theapparent construction activity and architectural identification, the work waslikely made during the second half of the 19th century, possibly circa 1860s-1870s.The artist is unknown. A handwritten pencil notation “Mai 19” appears near theupper left edge, likely indicating May 19.
Fair condition. The sheet shows overall age-relatedcoloration and toning, with scattered soiling, surface dirt, and handlingmarks. There are areas of light rubbing and uneven graphite density, particularly in the more delicately drawn portions of the architecture andtree. The sheet has minor edge wear and slight irregularity along the edges, together with small creases and general handling wear. The drawing remainssubstantially intact, and the principal architectural details are clearlyvisible. Unframed. Please refer to the pictures for condition.
