Original Drawing – Bertram Hartman – Female Nude – 20thCentury New York Master Painter
An original charcoal drawing of a nude female model studytitled “Japanese Girl” by New York-based modernist master painter BertramHartman (1882–1960).
Hartman’s works have been collected by majorinstitutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the BrooklynMuseum. He passed away in New York City in 1960. In the final years of hislife, Hartman created numerous New York cityscapes and figure studies. Thisdrawing likely dates to that period—it bears the stamp of the Bertram HartmanEstate in the lower left corner. On the reverse, the artist’s signature and thetitle “Japanese Girl” appear in pencil.
Compared to his oil and watercolor paintings, Hartman’sdrawings are relatively rare. In this nude study, we witness the artist’sexploration of the balance between shape and form.
