Description

Primavera after Sandro Botticelli-D. Anderson-Early 20th Century Photogravure An early 20th-century screened photogravure (heliogravure) reproducing Sandro Botticelli’s celebrated Primavera, after a photograph by D. Anderson, Rome. The regular photomechanical screen visible under magnification is consistent with an early screened gravure process rather than a conventional photographic print. The lower right of the image bears the photographic credit “D. Anderson, Phot. Roma.” Primavera, painted by Sandro Botticelli (c. 1445–1510) in the late 15th century, is one of the defining works of the Italian Renaissance and is now in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Domenico Anderson and the Anderson photographic firm in Rome were important producers of photographs documenting Italian paintings, sculpture, and architecture, and their images were widely used for high-quality reproductive prints during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Poor condition. The sheet has overall discoloration, handling marks, creases, stains, edge wear, and multiple tears and damages along the margins and edges. Remnants from previous mounting are present on the verso. The image area remains largely intact. Please refer to the pictures for condition. — Details: • Artist: After Sandro Botticelli (c. 1445–1510) • Photographer: D.
