Description
Pen and Ink Drawing – Girl – Magical Realism Artist Henry Koerner
Henry Koerner (1915–1991) was born in Vienna to a Jewish family and moved to New York in 1939. During WWII, he joined the U.S. Army and became known for his war posters and illustrations. After the war, his first one-man show—also the first solo exhibition by any artist in post-war Germany—was held in Berlin in 1947. Between 1955 and 1967, Koerner painted 46 Time Magazine covers, all live portraits of influential sitters. His artworks, including posters, illustrations, and his renowned magical realism paintings, are held in the collections of major museums worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and MoMA.
This pen and ink drawing is a strong example of Koerner’s skill as an illustrator. Using fluent lines and minimal shading, Koerner effectively conveys both spatial depth and mood. The artwork is in good condition. It was previously mounted and glued to a backing board. The reverse side of the board bears a label from Midtown Galleries, NYC, with the title of the drawing.
