Description

Orpheus and Eurydice–19th Lithograph After Thiriat Wood Engraving–After H. Léopold Lévy

A 19th-century lithographic reproduction after the wood engraving by Henri Thiriat (1843–1926), itself engraved after the painting Orpheus and Eurydice by French academic artist Henri Léopold Lévy (1840–1904).
This sheet is not the original wood engraving, but a lithographic transfer made after Thiriat’s engraved interpretation of Lévy’s painting. The composition captures the dramatic mythological moment of Orpheus attempting to reclaim Eurydice, rendered with finely translated line work characteristic of reproductive printmaking in the late 19th century.
Such lithographic reproductions were commonly issued in art journals and portfolio publications to make Salon works accessible to a wider audience. The image retains the engraved aesthetic, including visible hatch patterns and relief-style line structure.
The impression is clean and well-preserved, with strong contrast. The sheet shows light, age-appropriate toning and minor edge wear. The reverse is blank.
