Description

Orpheus – 19th Century Heliogravure Reproduction after Paul-Édouard Rosset-Granger

A 19th-century heliogravure titled Orpheus, reproduced after the original painting by French academic artist Paul-Édouard Rosset-Granger (1853–1934). The composition depicts the mythological poet Orpheus seated within a wooded, pastoral landscape, surrounded by attentive figures and animals enchanted by his music. Nude and semi-draped figures gather near a gently flowing stream while birds circle overhead, visually reinforcing the legendary power of Orpheus’ lyre to charm all living things. The arrangement reflects the poetic symbolism and refined naturalism characteristic of late 19th-century French academic painting.
The print bears the inscription: “ORPHEUS. From the Painting by Edouard Rosset-Granger.” The impression is executed on wove paper with wide margins and strong tonal gradation consistent with late 19th-century heliogravure processes. Rich blacks, soft midtones, and finely modeled highlights are visible throughout, particularly in the rendering of the figures, foliage, and flowing water. Light age toning, minor surface wear, and handling marks are present, consistent with period examples. The verso is blank.
About Heliogravure:
Heliogravure (also known as photogravure) is a refined intaglio printing process developed in the 19th century that combines photographic transfer with copperplate etching. Celebrated for its velvety blacks, subtle tonal transitions, and painterly depth, heliogravure was widely used to reproduce important academic and salon paintings. Each impression is hand-inked and printed from an etched plate, making it a true fine art print rather than a simple mechanical reproduction.
