Description

Lot of Figure Study Drawing-Herbert Leopold-20th Century American Artist Estate An archive of 20 portrait and figure studies from the estate of American artist Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009). Executed primarily in graphite and ink on assorted papers and translucent tracing vellum, the group includes male and female portrait heads, profile studies, seated figures, character studies, facial details, and sheets containing multiple variations of related subjects. The drawings range from rapidly observed linear sketches to more developed portraits with detailed shading and modeling. One small oil study on canvas depicts two female figures, adding a painted work to the otherwise paper-based group. The varied supports include loose sketchbook pages, lined paper, memo sheets, toned paper, and irregularly trimmed studio scraps. Herbert Leopold was an American painter, muralist, sculptor, illustrator, and educator. He studied at the American Artists School in New York before continuing his education at Pratt Institute. Following military service during World War II, Leopold spent several years studying and exhibiting in Europe before returning to the United States. He maintained studios in York, Pennsylvania, and Forest Hills, New York, painted murals, designed stained-glass windows, and taught art and art history at York College. Later in his career, he became active in medallic sculpture and served on the Board of Directors of the American Medallic Sculpture Association. The group is offered in as-is condition. The works exhibit age-related discoloration, handling marks, creases, folds, surface soiling, stains, tears, and edge and corner damage. Some sheets have been irregularly trimmed or are partially damaged. The drawings on translucent tracing vellum and the loose sketchbook pages are particularly fragile and should be handled carefully. The oil study shows wear along the unmounted canvas edges. Unframed. Please refer to the pictures for condition. ________________________________________ Details • Medium: Graphite and ink on paper and tracing vellum; one oil on canvas • Artist: Herbert Leopold (1920–2009) • Date: Mid-20th century • Quantity: 20 pieces • Provenance: – Estate of Herbert Leopold – Lion and Unicorn, Hollywood, FL, US • Framing: Unframed • Dimensions: – Largest: 14 x 9.5 in – Smallest: 5.5 x 4.5 in • Condition Report: As-is condition; age-related discoloration, handling marks, creases, folds, surface soiling, stains, tears, and edge and corner damage; some sheets are damaged or irregularly trimmed; tracing vellum and loose sketchbook pages are fragile; oil study with wear along the unmounted canvas edges; unframed ________________________________________ Disclaimer I have conducted thorough research to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of this work to the best of my ability.
