Description

Lot of Character Design Study Drawings-Herbert Leopold-20th Century American Artist Estate An archive of approximately 25 character-design studies and working drawings from the estate of American artist Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009). Executed primarily in ink and graphite on paper and translucent tracing vellum, the group includes caricature heads, theatrical figures, musicians, dancers, animals, birds, fantasy creatures, costume concepts, and commercial illustration ideas. Several larger sheets contain numerous variations of related characters, showing Leopold testing poses, expressions, proportions, costumes, and movement. Some drawings incorporate colored pencil, marker, or wash, while one piece is a xerographic copy rather than an original drawing. Herbert Leopold was an American painter, muralist, sculptor, illustrator, and educator. He studied at the American Artists School in New York before continuing his education at Pratt Institute. Following military service during World War II, Leopold spent several years studying and exhibiting in Europe before returning to the United States. He maintained studios in York, Pennsylvania, and Forest Hills, New York, painted murals, designed stained-glass windows, and taught art and art history at York College. Later in his career, he became active in medallic sculpture and served on the Board of Directors of the American Medallic Sculpture Association. The group is offered in as-is condition. The sheets exhibit age-related discoloration, handling marks, creases, folds, surface soiling, tears, edge and corner damage, tape, and tape residue. Some drawings have been irregularly trimmed or are incomplete, and several sheets have larger losses or damaged margins. The drawings on translucent tracing vellum are particularly fragile and should be handled carefully. Unframed. Please refer to the pictures for condition. ________________________________________ Details • Medium: Ink and graphite on paper and tracing vellum; some sheets with colored pencil, marker, or wash; one xerographic copy • Artist: Herbert Leopold (1920–2009) • Date: Mid-20th century • Marks: One sheet marked “Herbert Leopold Studios, 73-20 Austin St., Forest Hills, N.Y. 11375, (718) 268-0343” • Quantity: Approximately 25 pieces • Provenance: – Estate of Herbert Leopold – Lion and Unicorn, Hollywood, FL, US • Framing: Unframed • Dimensions: – Largest: 16.75 x 14 in – Majority: Approximately 12 x 10 in – Smallest: 4.75 x 3.5 in • Condition Report: As-is condition; age-related discoloration, handling marks, creases, folds, surface soiling, tears, edge and corner damage, tape, and tape residue; some sheets are damaged, incomplete, or irregularly trimmed; tracing vellum sheets are fragile; one xerographic copy included; unframed ________________________________________ Disclaimer I have conducted thorough research to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of this work to the best of my ability.
