Large Rome Print – 18th Century – Hand Colored Engraving – Ponte Sant’Angelo and Castel Sant’Angelo – Georg Balthasar Probst An 18th-century (ca. 1760–1790) hand-colored copperplate engraving, issued as a vue d’optique (optical view print), depicting the Ponte Sant’Angelo and Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome with the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica rising in the distance. The composition captures a bustling view of the Tiber, with boats, figures, carts, and lively trade in the foreground. The print was published in Augsburg by Georg Balthasar Probst (1732–1801), one of the most prominent publishers of architectural and topographical vue d’optique prints in the second half of the 18th century. His works were designed for viewing through a zograscope, explaining the exaggerated depth and often reversed inscriptions. This print belongs to his celebrated series of European city views. The impression shows rich hand coloring typical of Augsburg production, with detailed rendering of the bridge statues, urban skyline, and fortress. Condition:The print is in poor condition. It shows a tear and loss on the left margin, stains and soiling (notably in the lower margin and corners), scattered foxing, and general wear to the laid paper. The coloring is preserved but uneven.
