Description
Large Rome Print – 18th Century – Hand-Colored Engraving – Campidoglio and Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli – Georg Balthasar Probst
An 18th-century (ca. 1760–1790) hand-colored copperplate engraving, issued as a vue d’optique (optical view print), depicting the Roman Campidoglio (Capitoline Hill) with the monumental staircase (Cordonata) leading up to the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. To the right rises the Palazzo Senatorio with its bell tower and statues, while the foreground is animated with figures, horse-drawn carriages, and fountains, reflecting the lively grandeur of Rome’s civic center.
The print was published in Augsburg by Georg Balthasar Probst (1732–1801), one of the most prominent publishers of architectural and topographical vue d’optique prints in the second half of the 18th century. Designed for viewing through a zograscope, the exaggerated perspective and reversed top inscription are typical of this genre. This sheet belongs to Probst’s celebrated European city views, prized for their vibrant hand-coloring and detailed urban scenes.
Condition
The print is in poor condition. It shows handling wear and marginal soiling, scattered foxing, a central crease, and edge tears. Some browning appears at the margins, particularly left and top. The coloring remains vivid, with well-preserved architectural detail. Please consult photos for a complete visual reference.
