Large Garden Print-18th-Hand Colored-Engraving- Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna- Georg Balthasar Probst An 18th-century (ca. 1775–1790) hand-colored copperplate engraving, issued as a vue d’optique (optical view print), showing the formal baroque gardens of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The print was engraved by Augsburg printmaker G.G. Winckler and published by Georg Balthasar Probst (1732-1801) who specialized in architectural and garden scenes of famous European landmarks. The perspective looks down one of the garden’s principal allées, with trimmed hedges, fountains, statuary, and promenading figures in 18th-century costume. In the distance rises the Gloriette, the monumental garden pavilion constructed in 1775. The print was intended to be viewed through a zograscope (optical viewer), which explains the exaggerated perspective depth and mirrored inscriptions sometimes found in similar works. The impression is in poor condition. The print has minor damages, and the laid paper has discoloration and water stains. Please refer to the pictures for condition information.
