Large Garden Print – 18th Century – Hand Colored Engraving – Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna – Georg Balthasar Probst An 18th-century (ca. 1760–1790) hand-colored copperplate engraving, issued as a vue d’optique (optical view print), depicting the central allée of the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The scene looks directly toward the palace, with elaborate fountains, figures in 18th-century costume, and a large ornamental pool with boats and gondolas in the foreground. The work captures the grandeur of imperial Baroque landscaping, combining architectural formality with lively human activity. The print was published in Augsburg by Georg Balthasar Probst (1732–1801), one of the leading producers of vue d’optique engravings of European landmarks. Such prints were designed for viewing through a zograscope (optical viewer), which enhanced the sense of depth and sometimes reversed the inscriptions. This sheet belongs to Probst’s well-known series of Schönbrunn views. Condition:The impression is in poor condition. The sheet has edge tears, corner folds, and stains (notably lower right and left edges). There is scattered foxing and toning, and the coloring is somewhat uneven though still vibrant.
