Description
Large Garden Print – 18th Century – Hand Colored Engraving – Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna – Georg Balthasar Probst
An 18th-century (ca. 1760–1790) hand-colored copperplate engraving, issued as a vue d’optique (optical view print), depicting the Allée des Fontaines (“Fountain Walk”) in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna. The view presents a symmetrical perspective of Baroque garden design, with elaborate parterres, tiered fountains, and gilded statues set within a grand landscape of clipped hedges and avenues. Figures in 18th-century costume stroll among the fountains, emphasizing the space as both a site of leisure and imperial display.
The print was published in Augsburg by Georg Balthasar Probst (1732–1801), one of the most prolific publishers of vue d’optique engravings of European landmarks. Intended for viewing through a zograscope, the print features exaggerated perspective and is captioned in multiple languages to appeal to international audiences.
ConditionThe print is in poor condition. It shows age-toning, scattered foxing, marginal staining, and corner wear with a small loss at the right edge. A faint water stain is visible at the upper margin. The hand-coloring remains vivid, particularly in the reds, greens, and yellows, with good contrast across the architectural and landscape details. Plate impression is strong. Verso blank, with mild offsetting. Please refer to the pictures for more details.
