Description

Large Collection of Comic & Cartoon Sketches-Herbert Leopold-20th Century American Artist Estate An archive of 25 original sketches and drawings for comics and cartoons from the estate of American artist Herbert L. Leopold (1920–2009), together with a collection of 35 printed and reproduced examples of Leopold’s work on newspapers, flyers, and xerox copies. The drawings were executed primarily in ink, gouache, watercolor, marker, graphite, and other mixed media on paper. Several works are signed or initialed with “H Leopold,” “HLeopold,” or “HEL.” Herbert Leopold was an American painter, muralist, sculptor, illustrator, cartoonist, and educator. He studied at the American Artists School in New York before continuing his education at Pratt Institute. Following military service during World War II, Leopold spent several years studying and exhibiting in Europe before returning to the United States. He maintained studios in York, Pennsylvania, and Forest Hills, New York, painted murals, designed stained-glass windows, and taught art and art history at York College. Later in his career, he became active in medallic sculpture and served on the Board of Directors of the American Medallic Sculpture Association. The group is offered in as-is condition. Condition varies considerably among the individual sheets. The works exhibit age-related discoloration, handling marks, creases, folds, wrinkling, surface soiling, stains, foxing, edge wear, and corner wear. Some works have tears, small losses, irregularly trimmed edges, tape, tape residue, previous mounting materials, or are mounted or attached to backing sheets. Several tracing-paper and other thin-paper works show pronounced handling wear and creasing. The red tape border surrounding one drawing is lifting and deteriorated. Unframed. Please refer to the pictures for condition. — Details: • Medium: Mixed media on paper, primarily ink, gouache, watercolor, marker, and graphite • Artist: Herbert Leopold (1920–2009) • Date: Primarily 1970s–1990s • Signatures: Several works signed or initialed, including “HEL,” “H Leopold,” and “HLeopold” • Quantity: 25 original drawings + 35 printed/reproduced items • Provenance: – Estate of Herbert Leopold – Lion and Unicorn, Hollywood, FL, US • Framing: Unframed • Dimensions: Various; largest sheets approximately 15 × 14.5 in. • Condition Report: As-is condition; condition varies considerably among the individual sheets; age-related discoloration, handling marks, creases, folds, wrinkling, surface soiling, stains, foxing, edge wear, and corner wear; some sheets with tears, small losses, irregular trimming, tape, tape residue, previous mounting materials, or attachment to backing sheets; several thin or tracing-paper works with pronounced handling wear and creasing; red tape border on one work is lifting and deteriorated; unframed — Disclaimer: I have conducted thorough research to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of this work to the best of my ability.
