Description

Large 19th-Century German City Print – Rottweil and Ulm – After Matthäus Merian A large-format sheet containing two panoramic city views after Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650). The upper register depicts Rottweil in the 17th century, with its fortified walls, watchtowers, and clustered churches rising above the Neckar valley. Below is a sweeping view of Ulm from the southwest, showing the vast expanse of cultivated fields leading to the walled city, dominated by the monumental Münster (cathedral) with its soaring Gothic spire. These compositions originally appeared in Merian’s Topographia Sueviae (1643), part of his monumental Topographia Germaniae series. The present sheet is a 19th-century lithographic transfer reproduction, produced in Germany as part of the many reprint projects that revived Merian’s city views for a wider audience of historians and collectors. The impression is sharp and clean, printed on smooth wove paper with ample margins. The sheet is in excellent condition, with only light toning and a minor corner crease, making it well-suited for display or framing.
