Description

Henry Farrer – The Washerwoman – 19th Century Etching – New York Artist

Henry Farrer (1844–1903) was a British-born, New York-based artist known for his tonal watercolor landscapes and etchings depicting New York City scenes. In 1877—the same year this etching was made—he co-founded the New York Etching Club to promote etching as an independent art form rather than simply a medium for reproduction. His etchings are celebrated for their remarkable tonal transitions, a quality evident in this work.

Other impressions of The Washerwoman are held in major collections, including the British Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the RISD Museum.

This impression is in good condition. Despite being printed on delicate Japanese paper, it shows only a few minor creases in the upper portion of the sheet.
