Graphite Drawing – Family–Theorem – New York Modernist James Spencer Russell
James Spencer Russell (1915–2000) was an Indiana-born artist who made his career in New York. Versatile across drawing, painting, installation, and printmaking, his graphite drawings stand out for their style and sophistication. In this series, Russell employed precise patterns, textures, shading, and geometric composition, often weaving in letters to evoke a print-like quality—his work is unmistakably distinct from that of his contemporaries.
This piece, titled Family–Theorem, is in good condition. The title is inscribed in pencil at the lower left, with the artist’s signature at the lower right. You can see the Strathmore Artist paper emboss on the verso, lower right. There are slight water stains and fold marks in the lower corners.
