Description
Engraving of Caspar Netscher by Master Engraver Joseph Sebastian Klauber
This is an original engraving by Joseph Sebastian Klauber (1700–1768), based on a self-portrait of Caspar Netscher (1639–1684), a prolific Dutch portrait painter of the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. The engraving was also informed by a drawing by L. Beauduin, though little is known about this artist.
Joseph Sebastian Klauber, along with his brother Johann Baptist Klauber (1712–1787), was a highly regarded German engraver and fine art publisher. This print exemplifies Klauber’s masterful skill in engraving, demonstrating his ability to create depth, structure, and texture through meticulous carving on a copper plate—an artistic feat that remains astonishing.
This particular engraving has been collected by major institutions, including the British Museum and Harvard Art Museums.
The print measures 9.5 × 6.5 inches and has been trimmed, removing the plate marks. The ink lines remain sharp and dark, with an embossed effect, printed on laid paper. Given Klauber’s active period, this engraving was likely produced between 1715 and 1768.
At the bottom of the print, the following inscriptions appear:
“Peint par Gaspar Netscher” (Painted by Caspar Netscher)
“Dessinee par L. Beauduin” (Drawn by L. Beauduin)
“Grave par J.S. Klauber, Graveur de S. A. A.” (Engraved by Joseph Sebastian Klauber, Engraver to His Serene Highness)
“Portrait de Gaspard Netscher” (Portrait of Caspar Netscher)
“De la Galerie de S. A. S. Monseigneur le Duc d’Orleans” (From the Gallery of His Serene Highness, Monseigneur the Duke of Orleans)
The print is in excellent condition, with only natural toning and minor foxing.
