Description
Elbwangen – 19th-Century Reprint – Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia – After Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch, 1549
A finely preserved 19th-century reprint book leaf from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia Universalis, showing the fortified town of Elbwangen an der Jagst (Baden-Württemberg). The design, originally cut by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch (1525–1571) and signed with his monogram RMD at lower right, depicts the clustered houses of the town, the twin-towered Stiftskirche, and the castle rising on the hillside beyond. At upper center appears a large composite coat of arms, identifying Heinrich, Pfalzgraf and Bishop of Worms, and Provost of Ellwangen. The inscription reads: Elbwangen. Cap. cccxciii. Anno 1549.
The verso is printed with German blackletter text and includes a woodcut vignette of armored knights on horseback in combat. The impression is printed on wove paper and is mounted on a piece of backing laid paper. The print is in very good condition except for minor foxing, though the backing sheet shows some wear at the edges.
