Description
Diana at the Bath – 19th Century Heliogravure Reproduction after Jean-François de Troy
A 19th-century heliogravure titled Diana at the Bath, reproduced after the original painting by French Rococo artist Jean-François de Troy (1679–1752). The composition depicts the goddess Diana reclining after her bath, attended by nymphs in a wooded landscape. One figure adjusts her hair while others gather drapery and hunting attributes nearby. Hunting dogs rest at the foreground, reinforcing Diana’s identity as the goddess of the chase. The arrangement balances sensuality and refinement, characteristic of 18th-century French mythological painting.
The print bears the inscription: “Diana at the Bath. From the Painting in the Museum, Nancy, by Jean François de Troy.” The impression is executed on wove paper with wide margins and strong tonal gradation consistent with late 19th-century photogravure processes. Rich blacks, soft midtones, and fine detail are visible throughout, particularly in the modeling of figures and the textured foliage. Light age toning and minor edge wear are present, consistent with period examples.
About Heliogravure:
Heliogravure (also known as photogravure) is a refined intaglio printing process developed in the 19th century that combines photographic transfer with copperplate etching. Celebrated for its velvety blacks, subtle tonal transitions, and painterly depth, photogravure was widely used to reproduce important academic and museum paintings. Each impression is hand-inked and printed from an etched plate, making it a true fine art print rather than a simple mechanical reproduction.
