Cross-Beni E Kosh-1960s African American Abstract Oil Painting on Board-Framed A framed oil painting on board by Beni E. Kosh, born Charles Elmer Harris (1917-1993), titled Cross and dated 1967. The work is signed and dated “Beni Kosh 67” at the lower right. Beni E. Kosh was a Cleveland-based African American artist who worked across abstraction, figuration, social realism, surrealism, and modernist composition. Born Charles Elmer Harris, he later changed his name to Beni E. Kosh, meaning “Son of Ethiopia,” in connection with his African heritage. He studied with Paul Travis at the Cleveland Institute of Art, was associated with the Sho Nuff Art Group and Karamu House. Kosh made various works connected to Cleveland, the Rust Belt, and African American heritage. His work was largely rediscovered near the end of his life and after his death. This painting depicts an abstract and surrealist composition with cross-like geometric forms, checkerboard patterning, small figural elements, and a central architectural structure. The verso bears the Beni Kosh Collection stamp and collection number 271. The painting is in good condition. The image and frame show age-related wear, with some paint loss and surface wear. Framed.
