Description
Beggar Sitting and Eating – 18th Century Etching after Jacques Callot
An etching by an anonymous artist after the Baroque master Jacques Callot’s Beggar Sitting and Eating (the 24th plate from the Les Gueux suite, also known as Les Mendiants, Les Baroni, or Les Barons). Callot’s etchings were copied by numerous contemporary and later artists. This impression closely follows Callot’s work and was identified as an authentic Callot by the previous collector; however, careful comparison with the original reveals subtle differences.
The impression is in good condition. It was printed on high-quality, thick laid paper, widely used in the 18th century. The plate mark and ink lines are strong and crisp. The verso is slightly soiled. The paper shows minor age-related toning.
