Description

Another original mid-20th century male nude ink drawing by Alfred van Leon in a minimalist, continuous line drawing style. Alfred van Leon (1924–1993) was a German-born American sculptor, draftsman, printmaker, and art educator. His works were collected by various prominent collectors and museums. For example, his sculpture “Chess Board with Case” (1991) was permanently collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While his sculptures are highly acclaimed, it is less well known to the public that Alfred van Leon was also a prominent draftsman. In this drawing dated ’56, van Leon exhibited his masterful control of lines and the ability to create space. A similar continuous line drawing style has been practiced by various modern and contemporary masters, including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Jean Cocteau. Like those predecessors, van Leon’s lines are fluent and expressive. The difference is that while Matisse and Picasso, especially in their late careers, use lines to translate 3D objects into 2D patterns, van Leon uses simple, continuous lines to construct 3D forms in space, which is unique among his contemporaries. This work was drawn on printmaking paper and measures 14 x 11 inches. Van Leon’s signature and date are on the lower right. The piece is in good condition without clear signs of damage.
