Description
19th Century Mythology Etching – Leukothea Appears to Odysseus – Hans Meyer after Friedrich Preller
This beautiful etching was created by award winning German artist Hans Meyer (1846–1919) in 1881 after a painting by Friedrich Preller (1804–1878). The original painting is held by the Art Gallery of Munich. It depicts the goddess Leukothea emerging from the stormy sea before a desperate Odysseus. Despite its modest size, Meyer captures intricate storm details and a dynamic composition that emphasizes hope.
Other impressions of this print are held by the Toledo Museum of Art and Syracuse University Art Museum.
