Description
19th Century Landscape Etching – Up the Hill – New York Artist James David Smillie
A finely executed landscape etching by New York-based painter, engraver, and etcher James David Smillie (1833–1909), founder of the American Watercolor Society and the New York Etching Club. This etching depicts a pleasant countryside scene with a hill and a small road leading the viewer’s eye across the landscape. The etching showcases Smillie’s skill as both a draftsman and printmaker. Another impression of this print is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art.
Most descriptions list the paper as laid, but this impression appears to be on wove paper with an artificial laid pattern. Overall, it's in good condition, with only a water stain on the bottom margin outside the image area and some coloration on the reverse. All corners and edges are intact.
