19th Century Engraving – The Illness of Antiochus – After 17th Century Gerard de Lairesse Painting
This engraving was originally from the 1814 book Galerie du Musée Napoléon (T.9), published by Parisian engraver and publisher Antoine Michel Filhol (1759–1812). The book contains 718 engraved plates after paintings in the collection of the Musée Napoléon. This particular print is after a painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Gerard de Lairesse (1641–1711), which is now preserved in the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, Germany. The painting depicts the scene in which Erasistratus reveals the cause of Antiochus’s illness—love for his stepmother. Interestingly, in the original painting by Lairesse, Erasistratus looks at Antiochus sympathetically. In this engraving, however, he gazes toward the viewer with an elated expression.
The draftsman for this print was Sébastien Leroy (d. 1832); etching was done by Alexis Chataigner (1772–1817), and engraving by Claude Niquet (1770–1831). Most likely, the initial design was etched onto the plate before fine details were added via engraving.
