1930s – Mixed Medium Painting – Serpent of the East – New York Artist – Harry Knox Smith
Harry Knox Smith (1879–1957) was an American modernist artist. He was born in Philadelphia and moved to New York City in the 1910s. Not associated with major art groups, Smith’s painting style is unique—he often depicted mythological or imaginary scenes in a dreamy yet narrative way, making his works both symbolic and thought-provoking. Many of his paintings, including this work, were created using mixed media—combining charcoal, pastel, and watercolor.
This painting on paper, Serpent of the East, was completed in 1932. It is mounted on a window mat. Other than some minor discoloration and a few creases on the mat, the painting itself is in good condition with no visible damage.
