Description
1930s Graphite Portrait Drawing – Boy – New York Artist John Wesley Carroll
This graphite drawing, titled Boy, was created by New York–based painter, draughtsman, and printmaker John Wesley Carroll (1892–1959). Active from the early 1920s, Carroll was closely associated with American modern masters such as George Bellows and Robert Henri. His works are held in major museum collections, including the National Gallery of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Carroll’s style blends influences from Cubism and El Greco, and this particular drawing exemplifies his exploration of Cubist aesthetics.
The drawing bears Carroll’s pencil signature and is in excellent condition. It is mounted on a board with a window mat. The back of the board features a label from the Art Students League of New York, where Carroll once taught.
