18th-Century Engraving of Louise, Duchess of Portsmouth in an Undress
Sold
Description
An engraving depicting Louise de Kérouaille (1649–1734), Duchess of Portsmouth, who was the mistress of King Charles II of England, created by an anonymous artist.
The same design of this print was used in Thomas Jefferys' book A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Antient and Modern. Particularly Old English Dresses. After the Designs of Holbein, Vandyke, Hollar, and Others, published between 1757 and 1772.
I am unsure which version was the first, but the engraving I have is printed on laid paper with a watermark that appears to be part of "ELDER", suggesting it was likely made on Van Gelder paper. Another source states that a similar print was produced in 1790. Since most "VAN GELDER" watermarks I have found date to the 1800s, this aligns with that conclusion.
