Description
17th German City Print–19th Reproduction-Calw and Cannstatt –M Merian
A large-format sheet featuring two panoramic city views after Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650). The upper register shows Calw in the Black Forest, with its fortified town, clustered churches, and the ruins of a castle crowning the wooded hillside. In the foreground, two figures survey the scene beneath a prominent tree, a classic framing motif of Merian’s compositions. The lower view depicts Cannstatt (today part of Stuttgart), enclosed by stout defensive walls and towers, with the Neckar River winding through the foreground. Both views were originally engraved for Merian’s Topographia Sueviae (1643), one of the most important volumes of his monumental Topographia Germaniae series. The present sheet is a 19th-century lithographic transfer reproduction, part of the revival projects that brought Merian’s celebrated cityscapes to a wider audience of scholars and collectors. The impression is sharp and clear, printed on smooth wove paper with wide margins. The sheet is in excellent condition, showing only faint toning and minor handling marks, making it highly suitable for framing or study.
