An unframed oil painting on board by Beni E. Kosh, born Charles Elmer Harris (1917-1993), titled #15. The work is from the Beni Kosh Collection and bears the collection stamp and number 190 on the verso.
Beni E. Kosh was a Cleveland-based African American artist who worked across abstraction, figuration, social realism, surrealism, and modernist composition. Born Charles Elmer Harris, he later changed his name to Beni E. Kosh, meaning “Son of Ethiopia,” in connection with his African American heritage. He studied with Paul Travis at the Cleveland Institute of Art and was associated with the Sho Nuff Art Group and Karamu House. Kosh made various works connected to Cleveland, the Rust Belt, and African American heritage. His work was largely rediscovered near the end of his life and after his death.
This painting features an abstract composition with blue geometric forms, rust-orange linear outlines, black accents, and a textured pale ground. The work has a modernist abstract quality, with intersecting shapes and linear structures arranged across the surface.
